Heian Jidai

The Heian period was preceded by the Nara period and began in 794 after the movement of the capital of Japan to Heian kyo (present day Kyoto), by the 50th emperor, Emperor Kammu. It is considered a high point in Japanese cultre that later generations have always admired. The rise of the samurai class, which would eventualyl take power and start the feudal period of Japan, was known to start during this era. But long before the Sengoku Jidai, threats greater than possible military uprising existed.

They are the Yôkai, creatures thought to only exist in Japanese folklore. Some possessed animal and human features while others were downright grotesque, retaining monstrous humanoid forms. Yôkai held spiritual and supernatural power, so any encounters with human beings proved to be dangerous. Throughout the years, mankind tried to figure out what the purpose of the Yôkai was, but they had different motives and agendas from human beings of which were completely incomprehensible.

The oni were the first of the Yôkai race that presented themselves from humans. They were mountain-dwelling ogre, often carrying an iron club or a giant sword. Most were indeed evil and their strength outclassed even the growing class of the Samurai. As more began to surface, the higher class Yôkai decided it was time to make an appearance and throw much of the known world into despair. But the Heian Jidai period would eventually gain the hope they needed, a human being capable of matching the powerful wrath of the Yôkai.

Midoriko, the great miko with the ability to seize the souls of Yôkai and purfy them, took her blade to the fiercest demons of the Heian Jidai Era. She was said to be as powerful as 100 samurai in her time because of her tremendous spiritual power. That power alone paled that of any other person alove, and it was said she could purify and destroy ten powerful Yôkai at once. Magatsuhi, her final adversary and the one that claimed her life, was created by many Yôkai joined and anchored within the evil heart of a human who secretly lusted for her.

After seven days and seven nights of fighting, Midoriko realized she would be unable to fight off the Yôkai, and as she was drawn into the creature's massive jaws, she seized Magatsuhi's spirit and bound it within her own witht he last of her power. This killed them both and created the Shikon no Tama, a jewel that existed well into the Sengoku Jidai, where her soul and Magatsuhi would battle on for all eternity. The jewel would be controlled by various humans and Yôkai for centuries until being discovered by a yôkai taijiya, who would then entrust it to a miko by the name of Kikyo.

Sengoku Jidai

The Warring States period (sengoku jidai) was a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict in Japan. During this period, the central authority was weakened, and through Japan, the daimyo rose to fill the vacuum. In the course of this power shift, well established clans such as the Takeda and the Imagawa, who had ruled under the authority of both the Kamakura and Muromachi bakufu, were able to expand their spheres of influence.

However, the conflict with demons had yet to quell. The Shikon no Tama resurfaced and, with the promise of great power to those who wielded the entire thing, came some of the most powerful Yokai known to man. Great Yokai assumed their own positions as daimyo and fought to co-exist with mankind whilst attempting to gain control of the jewel, but a hanyo by the name of InuYasha gathered a group of followers (consisting of Kagome, the lecherouch monk Miroku, the demon slayer Sango, and Sango's companion Kirara) in hope of finding the jewel shards before a new, powerful Yokai by the name of Naraku could obtain it.

In the end, they could not stop Naraku from seizing the Shikon no Tama, but the yokai was eventually defeated and pulled into the jewel, where InuYasha and Kagome would both enter (Kagome, against her will) to decide the fate of the jewel. If the wrong wish would have been made, Kagome would have taken the place of Midoriko and Naraku would have been revived, taking Magatsuhi's place. But with InuYasha nearby, Kagome was able to see clearly what the 'correct' wish was. She wished it'd disappear, thus purifying and destroying it.

The great Midoriko's battle with Magatsuhi ended... and three years passed.

Now...

Not yet out of the Warring State's period, several clans are seeking control of many provinces of Japan, but none have yet to gain any strong footing. Mankind has since been silent about their dealings with Naraku and the other Yôkai. Yet still, the yokai taijiya fight strong to exterminate them, thus leaving the fate of man and Yôkai alike in the balance. Some of the Daiyôkai's have started to come together in small meetings to muse on their plans for survival and some have even mentioned war on mankind.

With warlords of man and Yôkai fixated on one another, a threat unseen by many has been looming over Feudal Japan. The remnants of Magatsuhi; yokai who have spawned from his essence whilst in the jewel, who escaped undetected from the Shikon no Tama when Inuyasha opened a path into it. Many have surfaced in spirit form, taking powerful demons that have emerged from the underworld (when Sesshômaru-sama opened a path into it), while others have manifested physically and have been in hiding for many years.

Seeing how easily human and Yôkai are to corrupt, these superior yokai have several options before them. As Japan's Sengoku Jidai era enters its most disasterous chapter, two questions remain: Who will be swept away and ultimately die? In whose hands will Japan's fate lie in? That of mankind or the Yôkai.
